Hi Everyone,

I need help in a situation - I was working for an Indian company and was on notice period for 3 months - now I need to ship company laptop back by next week from Toronto to Gurgaon (Delhi)- as of now I could not find anyone known who is traveling to India who could take it.

What is the best way to ship my company laptop without any customs hurdles - is UBS, DHL or FedEx safe - I do not want my company laptop to be stuck in customs.

Regards,
Karan

I don't know why this is even a question.. All above mentioned couriers are accepted.
Question is - is there any chance that my company laptop might get stuck in customs? I am sending it to my home address first as company is not accepting international couriers due to compliance issues.

Is there a chance that it might get stuck in customs? If it gets stuck I might have to shell out money for a laptop that is not even mine.

Who knows? There is always a chance for anything to happen with anything.. Your question has no YES or NO answer. We are not customs, it might, it might not. Relax and send the laptop home.

Why would you have to shell out money if it was delayed by customs? Take all due consideration in sending it back the most secure way possible, and then see what happens. Doesn’t seem to be any other options.

Bring it back yourself if you want to make sure. Get a flight ticket...

As others have replied, you can only hope that it will be there safe and sound. Found the most secure way and see.

Hi Karan,

I am IT professional and recently got COPR. I am planning to do first landing in July. As currently there is work from home, so I thought of continuing work from Canada for my Indian company till I find a new job in Canada.

Can I bring my Indian company's offocial laptop to Canada? Will there be any legal hurdle at border in doing so? Kindly advise.TIA

Typically, you are allowed to bring a laptop computer back to India. Now as it happens, if your laptop computer is a company owned computer, you need one letter from your company that it is attached to some SEZ or something and no duty is due on it. This is called a bonded asset. Its bound to your employer and the SEZ they are operating in so they avoid paying duties on assets. This is how people travel outside India with their company laptops without any issue of duties. Had it been a personal computer, you are supposed to carry a recipt or something showing its duty and tax paid status and a declaration while emigrating that you took it out of India while travelling abroad.

Your issue is that you are sending a laptop to India which is owned by your employer. You will certainly need to provide some documentation for that it is owned by your employer, it has all its duties either paid or exempt in India and a declaration that it is not an import but returned asset from abroad.

PS: While I have face the situation in the first paragraph, I have never faced the situation in second paragraph. Ask the courier folks, they will know.

What Did you do? Did you ship it back to your employer in India? If yes, how? Were there any custom charges?

There is no way you can avoid customs. They would charge you around 70percent of the value you declare . Don't declare the value too less or too high to avoid suspicion . Be fair about the value . From Canada to India try DHL .
