Please Help! Study permit issued less than the study period

My wife was suppose to begin her 1 year program at Humber college in Sept 2021 but there was delay in obtaining her visa. We had to defer her admission to Jan 2022 but the approval to defer came a bit late so we couldn't update IRCC on time. So she was given a study visa that expires in Nov 2022 but her program will now end in Dec 2022.

When we entered Canada in Dec 2021, she was only given a study permit that expires in Nov 2022. We showed the officer the new admission letter which shows that her program ends in December 2022, but the officer still didn't issue her a study permit that would cover her study period, only issued it to expire in Nov 2022.
Is this not wrong? What do you advise we do please? 11 months study permit issued for 1 year program.

We want this sorted out as soon as possible because I also need to quickly apply for spousal open work permit using my wife's study permit. The longer the study permit, the better.

Thanks.

This is not wrong at all. In September, she applies to extend her permit to complete her studies by December.

I had a similar situation. Applied for May 2021, then deferred for Sep 2021, but my visitor visa was still issued for May-Dec 2021. When I arrived in Canada, I did get my SP until July 2022 (I finish classes in Apr 2022 and they give you 3 extra months), but my wife only got her SOWP it until Mar 2022 because her passport expired in Apr 2022. She had to renew her passport and request an extension at the beginning of this year.

Your case is a bit different because I didn't get the SP as it should be. Check your passport's expiration date, that may be one reason you didn't get it for the dates you should have.

Thank you for the prompt response. My thought is that the study permit should be issued based on the new admission letter and not based on the study visa.

Did you update your file with the new admission letter on the IRCC website prior to coming to Canada? Or did you enter Canada with the new LOA and ask CBSA to give you a longer permit? If the latter, CBSA doesn't have to extend the permit. It makes no difference to your wife's studying as she will complete her studies with a valid permit. You extend within Canada through IRCC.

Thanks. Its not because of her passport expiration date. It expires in 2026.
I still wonder why ours didn't go well. At what point did you update IRCC with the new LOA?

By the time we got the new LOA, her study visa was already approved. So we decided to present the new LOA to CBSA upon entering into Canada.
But we later updated her profile with the new LOA after obtaining the SP.

Sorry, I don't understand the later part of your message where you said it makes no difference...........

Thanks

Even with the approved study permit, you should have updated her file with the new LOA prior to entering Canada. CBSA doesn’t have to extend any permits and can work off your current online file (not the new LOA). As for it not making a difference, your spouse will still be able to complete her studies. She is not without a study permit and only needs to extend it by a month. She can do this in the fall.
