Canada has long been known as a peaceful nation and continues to rank high on the Global Peace Index. Out of 153 countries polled, Canada was ranked number eight for its peacefulness.
According to a recent survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the average Canadian home has 2.5 rooms per person, the highest among the other 34 countries studied by OECD. The average number of rooms per person in the other countries was only 1.6. Canadians have continued buying bigger properties compared to Americans. And while the average American works 1,768 hours a year, Canadians work an average of 1,699 hours a year.
Canada is gaining in popularity and attracting the brightest immigrants from around the world. According to the latest Migrant Integration Policy Index, ranked Canada third of 31 countries for how well it grants equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities to immigrants. A recent survey revealed that 30 percent of Canada’s wealthiest families with assets of $1 million or more are new Canadians or immigrants. And it’s not just immigrant adults who are succeeding. Fifteen-year-old immigrant students perform as well as their Canadian peers in reading and other subjects, such as math and science.
Canada is also proving to be more entrepreneurial than the United States. Between 2001 and 2006, the number of self-employed Canadians increased by over 18 percent. By 2008, there were close to 3 million Canadians who were self-employed and numbers are expected to rise as many Canadians and recently landed immigrants are considering opening up a business. A recent report by the U.S. Small Business Association ranked Canada second for entrepreneurialism based on the quality and quantity of businesses, whereas the United States ranked third.
Canada is known to have the most commercially successful space industry in the world. According to recent findings from the Canadian Space Agency, Canada’s space sector’s revenues were over $3 billion in 2009. In addition to being a leader in the space industry, Canada is leading the way in the health sector, specifically in stem-cell research. Researchers at the University of Calgary have also made great discoveries in stem cell research in adult brains. And Canada continues to attract top medical professionals from around the world.
