The poll was conducted by an organization called the Reputation Institute. It ranked the world’s 100 most reputable cities on factors such as safety, beauty, cultural offerings, and infrastructure. After calculating the scores, Vancouver claimed the top position over competing cities like Sydney and Vienna. The next closest Canadian cities were Toronto, in 22nd place, and Montreal in 26th place.
Smaller cities that valued the environment and citizen’s livelihoods tended to place higher than large metropolises. Such traits helped Vancouver rise amongst its competitor cities.
The city’s renowned diversity also played a part in its rankings.
“We believe that a factor in Vancouver’s stature is our reputation as a city where all nationalities gather comfortable, where over 40 first languages are spoken in the average school, where perhaps 50 per cent of our population has English as a second language and in our having a deep-seated respect for varied religious views,” said Tourism Vancouver president Rick Antonson.
This is not the first time Canada has ranked highly in polls conducted by the Reputation Institute. Earlier this year, it named Canada the world’s most reputable country for a second year in a row.
