A recent Statistics Canada report shows that 65 per cent of children of immigrant parents from China and India complete university in Canada. That is more than double the rate of any other ethnic group. For those whose parents were born in Canada, completion rates are 28 per cent.
“In general, immigrants to Canada tend to have higher levels of education, partly because of the immigration selection process,” said Feng Hou, a Statistics Canada analyst. “Family values of immigrants tend to emphasize education and because of that, their children have high aspirations.”
The data came from Statistics Canada’s 2002 Ethnic Diversity Survey and focused on a sample of 3,300 people between the ages of 25 and 34 years.
One third of youth whose parents were born in Portugal, the Netherlands, or the Caribbean completed their degrees in Canada. That number shrinks to 24 per cent if the parents were born in Germany or South or Central America.
The study also found that other factors, such as living in an urban area and having highly educated parents, have positive correlations to the university completion rates of children.
