Training in Skilled Trades - A Ticket to Work in Canada

Whether Canadian-born, landed immigrant, or soon-to-be Canadian immigrant, an individual with training in a skilled trade is highly employable in the current Canadian economy. With 50 per cent of workers in the skilled trades retiring in the next 15 years, “vocational training is a route to a sure job,” explains the principal of a technology training school in Montreal.

To deal with the serious labour shortages in skilled trade industries, the government of Canada has been implementing initiatives to encourage more Canadians to enroll in vocational training. This week, Human Resources and Social Development Canada (ESDC) launched the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant to help apprentices in skilled trades offset the costs of their tuition, tools, and travel. The 2006 budget allocated $500 million over two years to support skilled tradespeople.

There is an abundance of available jobs for skilled tradespeople in Canada . Canada provides temporary work permits to foreign-trained skilled workers who can obtain a Canadian job offer .

Most students who complete vocational education in Canada are obtaining employment immediately upon graduation. Recruiters are lining up to find qualified skilled tradespeople and companies are increasingly looking to foreign-trained workers to staff their organizations.
