Quebec Immigration working to help immigrants better integrate into Quebec society

the CanadaVisa Team - 23 July, 2015

Quebec immigration Minister Yolande James recently put forth a new diversity policy to help newcomers better prepare for integration into Quebec society. It will also help fight racism and discrimination and will ensure that all Quebec residents have equal opportunities.

The program has a large focus on the French language, providing access to French-language education and employment resources even before newcomers arrive in the province. Free French courses will be made available to immigrants, as well as access to online courses. The program also provides a tax credit to Quebec employers who help newcomers learn French.

Another component of the program seeks to make potential and new immigrants aware of Quebec's shared values, to facilitate settlement into their new communities. Information will be included in immigration application forms and pamphlets and DVD's will be distributed to newcomers that point to a new government website on the subject. Information sessions will also be offered to newly arrived immigrants.

The shared values of Quebec highlighted by this program include: Quebec is a free and democratic society; Quebec is a pluralist society based on the rule of law; church and state are separate; men and women have equal rights; and rights and freedoms are exercised while respecting those of others and the general well-being.

As of January, immigrants will be required to sign a declaration to acknowledge these shared values as a new resident of Quebec.
