Quebec amends Work Permit rules for international students

the CanadaVisa Team - 20 July, 2015

A new agreement between the Quebec government and the Government of Canada grants international students the right to seek off-campus work in all regions of Quebec, including Montréal and Québec City. Nearly one hundred schools across the province are eligible to participate under the newly tabled regulation.

The new arrangement announced by Quebec Minister of Immigration et Communautés culturelles, Lise Thériault allows 20 hours per week of off-campus work instead of the previous 15 hour limit during the school term. It also extends the validity of the off-campus Work permit to match that of the study permit.

Foreign students applying for the program are required to maintain satisfactory grades in order to obtain an off-campus work permit. What's more, both the province and its respective educational institutions must decide on a suitable monitoring system. The supervision, in the form of reports, must show that students are in good standing with their institution.

"I am delighted with the broadening of this program," said Minister Thériault. "This agreement will make Quebec more attractive on the international scene and allow it to remain competitive with other Canadian provinces that plan to implement such a program and with other countries where off-campus work is permitted."

Foreign students enrolled in exchange programs, ESL or FSL program, as well as those who have received scholarships are not eligible for the off-campus work program.
