The city of Montreal will receive $4.5 million over three years from the Quebec provincial government to fund programs to help immigrants find employment and learn about Quebec culture. On an annual basis, this is twice the amount that the provincial government has provided in the past for these programs.
Montreal is the major port of entry for immigrants to Quebec, and plays an important role in welcoming newcomers to Canada. Yolande James, Quebec Immigration and Cultural Communities Minister recently announced the funding in Montreal, stating, “We want to make sure we can put all the talent of incoming immigrants to use in society.”
Montreal is also doing its part to help newcomers settle in, noted Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay. One example is the work internship program for new arrivals provided by the city of Montreal.
