The Quebec provincial government has announced $68 million over the next three years to help newcomers find work in their fields more quickly. $22 million has been allocated for the next 12 months.
"Quebec cannot allow itself to be deprived of the rich human capital that immigrants represent," stated Yolande James, Quebec's minister of immigration and cultural communities. In announcing the new funding, she outlined 18 measures that have been designed "to open the doors of employment" for Quebec newcomers. One of her goals is that some future Quebec immigrants obtain a hiring commitment from a Quebec company prior to arrival.
Of that amount, $6 million will go towards a special program for the Montreal region, the destination of more than three-quarters of Quebec's immigrants.
