The Immigrant Business Start-Up Pilot, offered by the province of New Brunswick and Enterprise Saint John, is aimed at recent immigrants who are interested in starting a small business and wish to acquire the skills, training, and business contacts to do so.
The project will run for 10 months and will teach participants about the New Brunswick business culture. Participants will learn basic business concepts and gain on-the-job skills.
"This is an excellent opportunity for immigrants in the Saint John area to attain practical skills and receive the financial and personal support needed to start their venture and achieve their own personal goals," states Ed Doherty, New Brunswick Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.
Participants will be selected for their good business idea, entrepreneurial attitude, basic academic and language abilities, and their commitment to completing the program. The Immigrant Business Start-Up Pilot will begin with a Small Business and Life Skills training program, followed by a work placement whereby participants will gain Canadian business experience and skills. The rest of the program will be devoted to business plan development, loan applications, and finally business start-up.
Part of the Canada-New Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement, the Immigrant Business Start-Up Pilot "fits well with our goal of making New Brunswick a leader in economic development," explains Minister Doherty.
