Prince Edward Island has released details of the first monthly draw of the year, which took place on 20 January.

The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) issued a total of 132 invitations to apply for a provincial nomination.

Among these invitations,121 went to Express Entry and Labour Impact candidates. The remaining 11 invitations went to Business Impact candidates.

Candidates in the Business Impact category needed a minimum point threshold of at least 72. The province does not publish minimum score thresholds for Express Entry and Labour Impact candidates.

The PEI Expression of Interest (EOI) system was launched in 2018. The province holds monthly draws in its three main PNP categories according to a set draw schedule.

Overview of PEI PNP immigration streams

The province operates several immigration streams divided into three categories.

PEI's Express Entry category is an "enhanced" Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This means that prospective candidates who are in the federal Express Entry system and who have expressed their interest in moving to the the Atlantic province may be eligible for PEI Express Entry.

Express Entry is the management system used by the Canadian federal government to manage applications for the three main economic class immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Candidates who are in the Express Entry pool are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on their age, education, work experience, language ability and adaptability. Those who receive a provincial nomination from any province, are awarded an additional 600 CRS points toward their score. This practically guarantees an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence in a subsequent Express Entry draw.

PEI's Labour Impact category is for foreign candidates who have a valid job offer in the province with support from their employer. This category is further divided into the following streams:

Candidates who are interested in this category are required to first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with the PEI PNP.

The province's Business Impact category allows foreign nationals with business ownership or extensive management experience to invest in and run a business in PEI on a work permit, and eventually become permanent residents.
