The parent and grandparent sponsorship program, which previously saw a moratorium on application intake, began accepting applications once more on January 2, 2014.

“The redesigned Parent and Grandparent program reunites families faster while respecting Canadian taxpayers and the limited resources for health and social programs,” said former Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

A cap of 5,000 applications will be accepted to the program at this time. In addition, Canadian citizens and permanent residents looking to sponsor parents and grandparents for immigration must now meet new Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) thresholds. These MNI thresholds are calculated based on the official Low-Income Cutoffs (LICO) for both the province of Quebec and the rest of Canada.

MNI levels were put in place to ensure that families who sponsor older relatives are financially prepared to care for these relatives if need be. Sponsors must now prove that they have met or exceeded MNI thresholds for the previous three years.
