New Federal-Provincial Agreements on Training Development for Improved Labour Market Integration

the CanadaVisa Team - 23 July, 2015

Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has recently signed new Labour Market Agreements with provincial governments to improve the quality of Canada’s labour force.

Ontario, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan now each have their own agreements with the federal government to help workers in their respective provinces improve their skills and obtain meaningful and sustainable employment.

The programs aim to remove barriers to labour market participation in each province and to provide access to training for those who need to improve their skills. The focus is on currently unemployed residents of each province; those who are typically underrepresented in the work force and those who do not qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) training programs. Over the next six years, the Government of Canada will be investing $1.2 billion in Ontario’s labour market; $396 million in British Columbia’s; and $90 million in Saskatchewan’s labour market.

Newly arrived immigrants who need additional accreditation to work in the Canadian work force will benefit from these programs.

These agreements will go into effect on April 1, 2008. Similar agreements are currently being negotiated with other provinces and territories.
