In Brampton, Ontario, a fast-growing suburb of Toronto, a new centre has opened its doors to offer a broad range of services aimed to help immigrants navigate the Canadian job market. The Brampton Employment Resource Centre is an initiative funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to provide information and services to help newcomers build bridges into employment.
As a booming city that has been an attractive destination for immigrants to Canada, Brampton will be well-served by the new centre. The Employment Resource Centre will provide resources on finding a job in Canada, along with a newcomer information centre and training programs to bridge skills for the Canadian workplace. The centre aims to be a one-stop location for a broad range of settlement services, including counselling and workshops.
The initiative is a partnership between the Centre for Education and Training, a non-profit group, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). The federal government kicked in nearly $4 million in total to fund the various programs being offered. "Canada's government wants newcomers and their families to thrive and that is reflected in the additional settlement funding we've provided to provinces and territories," said the honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, about the centre.
The new centre will be well complemented by a new initiative by local businesses. The Brampton Board of Trade has released a resource guide for employers to help local businesses hire skilled immigrants. The Board of Trade partnered with various government and non-profit agencies to produce the guide to help connect employers with skilled immigrants in their city.
