This week the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, announced the appointment of a new Chairperson for Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). Lawyer Brian P. Goodman will take over the lead of the immigration tribunal for a period of 4 years.
The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada is an independent administrative tribunal independent from Citizenship and Immigration Canada that makes decisions on certain immigration and refugee matters. The IRB assesses refugee protection claims made from within Canada and also handles appeals on certain immigration matters. With hundreds of thousands of people arriving in Canada each year, the IRB is the largest administrative tribunal in Canada.
Since the resignation of previous Chairperson Jean-Guy Fleury in March of this year, Mr. Goodman has held the post of interim Chairperson. Mr. Goodman initially joined the IRB in 2001 having worked both in the Refugee Protection Division and as Deputy Chairperson of the Immigration Appeal Division. A lawyer by training, Mr. Goodman holds an L.L.M. from Osgoode Hall in Toronto. Before joining the IRB, he earned a great deal of experience in various government and public sector positions.
