Canadian government to unveil new citizenship guide

the CanadaVisa Team - 23 July, 2015

Yesterday, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Canada Minister Jason Kenney announced that he will be introducing a new guide to Canadian citizenship that will include information on Canada's military history and issues of historical significance.

The new guide, which will be used by new Canadians to study for their Canadian citizenship tests, replaces one that has been in place since 1997.

Entitled "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship," the new guide will highlight the role of the Canadian military in the country’s past. Minister Kenney made the announcement a day before Remembrance Day, a day when all Canadians remember fallen Canadian soldiers and reflect on their contributions to the country's freedom.

In addition, the guide will contain information about confederation, social and political movements in Canada, and Canada's sporting heroes.

"We want to ensure that newcomers appreciate that citizenship is not just obtaining legal status, that it confers certain privileges and rights. It's joining the Canadian community and it's joining Canadian history," Kenney said.

Kenney will unveil the guide on Thursday.
