The latest national census confirmed that, though the population of New Brunswick has not decreased over the past five years, it has not seen much growth either. Greg Byrne, the minister responsible for the population growth secretariat has underlined the importance of encouraging people to settle in New Brunswick and to stay there.
The provincial government has allocated 3 million dollars towards initiatives to increase the province’s population, doublethe amount since last year. Much of this spending will be aimed at programs to attract newimmigrants to New Brunswick.
Byrne is initiating a comprehensive strategy to push New Brunswick’s population past the present 730,000 people. "We will have an advisory committee that will be made up of people from businesses and the multicultural organizations, from the communities and the universities, for example, because this is a problem we all need to work together on,"states Byrne.
