Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander recently returned from a two-day trip to India. While there, he discussed a range of immigration initiatives that will benefit Indians coming to Canada for a variety of purposes.

While in Canada, he shared some interesting insights about Canada’s Indian population. Perhaps most interestingly, according to government estimates more than one million Canadians can trace their origins to India. That means approximately one in every 35 Canadians identifies as Indian. This number is set to grow, as India is one of the largest source countries for new immigrants to Canada. In 2013 alone, over 33,000 new permanent residents originated from India.

Indian Canadians have played a historic role in the sculpting of Canadian identity. For more information on the history of Indian immigration, please read this recent article in CIC News.
