Manitoba provides affordable housing to new immigrants

the CanadaVisa Team - 06 January, 2011

The Government of Canada and the province of Manitoba are investing $9 million to renovate old housing units in Winnipeg for new immigrants. Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) will be overseeing the management of properties once the project is complete. One of the main goals of IRCOM is to provide immigrants with affordable housing in addition to providing settlement services.

Greg Selinger, Manitoba Premier, stated that “housing is a fundamental requirement for immigrants beginning a new and successful life in Manitoba... We know that when they get off to a good start, within five years many of them will become homeowners, and most get employment within the first six months.”

Moving to a new country can be very stressful. By providing immigrants with affordable and safe housing for up to three years after their arrival, the province is helping them to have a more smooth transition into a new society and into their new lives.
