Citizenship and Immigration Canada Minister Diane Finley recently announced funding for 19 organizations in Toronto to provide settlement services in schools, libraries, and community centres directed at young newcomers. This is the first year that funding has been allocated specifically for immigrant youth.
"Young people who are new to this country face their own unique challenges," states Minister Finley. "With this funding, newcomers in Toronto will have access to improved services [...which] will ease their transition to life in Canada and strengthen Toronto and the community as a whole."
The funding of over $36 million will go towards programs such mentorships and peer engagement through sports and the arts. The settlement services are being delivered throughout the city and in high needs areas in partnership with immigrant-serving organizations, the Toronto Public Library, and Toronto school boards.
With this funding, 75 settlement workers will be placed in libraries and 148 will be placed in Toronto schools.
