P.E.I. has a population of approximately 143,000 people. Nearly 8,000 immigrants have settled in P.E.I. in the past 5 years. Between this past July and September, 1,200 immigrants arrived in P.E.I., which marked the greatest population growth for any province.
Most new immigrants to P.E.I. come from Korea and China. There is also a growing Middle Eastern population. In response to the increased number of immigrants choosing to settle in the province, the P.E.I. Association for Newcomers to Canada created a comprehensive guide for newcomers to the country, explaining many social situations such as how one can get a health care card to how one leaves a tip at a restaurant.
In the past, immigrants chose P.E.I. as a temporary home, deciding to later move to bigger cities like Toronto and Montreal. Now, as more immigrants arrive in P.E.I., they are deciding to stay and build a sense of community. From new Turkish patisseries to speciality food items at the grocery store, citizens of P.E.I. are also reaping the benefits of their new multiethnic society.
