A new survey has revealed that almost half of Canada’s millionaires are either immigrants or first-generation Canadians.

The survey, conducted by BMO Harris Private Banking, found that fully 48 percent of the country’s millionaires had close ties to immigration. Twenty-four percent were immigrants themselves, while another 24 percet had at least one parent born outside of the country.

The majority of these millionaires were self-made, building their wealth from modest beginnings. Only 20 percent of survey respondents attributed part or all of their wealth to inheritance.

The survey also revealed a surprise regarding the gender of these affluent individuals: fully one third were women. This is up from just 21 percent three years ago.

One of the important traits many millionaires had in common was a good education. Eighty percent had at least a university degree, and of that number 46 percent had completed graduate studies.
