The Canadian Federal Government announced yesterday that there will be an election on October 14, 2009.
The Conservative party, lead by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has held a minority government in Canada since 2006, and is now hoping to win a majority position in Ottawa. Having a majority government is the only way to produce real change, claims Mr. Harper.
Key focuses of this campaign are the economy, the environment and immigration. The new formation in government will have great effect on immigration policy in Canada, in particular the recent changes to legislation regarding the skilled worker immigration category. Opposition governments have indicated that they would repeal this new legislation should the Conservatives fail to win this election.
