According to the Vancouver Sun, “Up until 2008, the demand in B.C. was mostly for skilled labourers to work in the province’s north [but] immigrants with a background in subjects such as math, physics and engineering are in demand now.”
PNPs are meant to give more say to Canada’s provinces in who will be let into Canada for permanent residency, encouraging those sought after for their particular skills to settle more diversely throughout the country.
Projected numbers are that up to 45,000 immigrants will enter Canada as permanent residents in 2012 through various province’s PNP programs, up from about 40,000 this year, out of about 250,000 immigrants overall.
Unlike some other federal programs, most PNP programs do require a job offer, or work experience in the particular province where the immigrant intends to initially settle.
