Overall employment grows in Canada

the CanadaVisa Team - 24 July, 2015

A recent Statistics Canada report reveals growth in Canada's employment numbers in April, surprising economic expectations. Though economists had predicted a drop of 50,000 jobs throughout the month, overall employment instead grew by 35,900.

"This is a better-than-expected report that no one saw coming," stated economists at ScotiaCapital Inc.

Most of this increase of people was through self-employment, as unemployed Canadians create their own work opportunities.

Around 39,400 full-time jobs were added in April, while 3,600 part-time jobs were lost. This is a reversal of the trend over the past few months, where part-time work growth was more significant than full-time.

Most of the job growth occurred in the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia. The largest sector growth was in information, culture and recreation; building and business support services; and agriculture.
