Ms. Uzma Shakir was recently awarded the Atkinson Economic Justice Fellowship to continue her community-based work around multiculturalism, immigration, and social inclusion. The award of up to $100,000 over three years will help Uzma Shakir focus on engaging new immigrants to build a stronger future for Canada.
"A stronger, more inclusive Canada is a dream that is worth fighting for. But for it to become a reality, today's immigrants and refugees must be among the architects that help shape the Canada of tomorrow," explained Uzma Shakir when presented with the award. "That is why we must find meaningful ways to bridge existing social divides on race, religion, gender, and class." Uzma Shakir is a leading advocate for immigrant communities and the current Executive Director of the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario.
Joseph E. Atkinson founded the Atkinson Charitable Foundation in 1942 to promote social and economic justice. He was an outspoken champion of new Canadian residents.
