Thanks to new funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto will be able to provide better access and improved services to newcomer families in the region.
$9.2 million will be channeled to the hospitals' immigrant support network that will help staff better meet the needs of recently-arrived patients. The network will provide cultural awareness education for healthcare professionals, including a comprehensive needs assessment to determine common issues faced by immigrant children and their families. It will also translate core patient health education articles into the most commonly required languages and make them available online as audio files.
"SickKids is thrilled to partner with Citizenship and Immigration on creating accessible health information for new immigrant families in Ontario," stated Mary Jo Haddad, President and CEO of the Hospital for Sick Children. She went on to say that the funding will help the Hospital for Sick Children "make best practices available to other hospitals across Ontario through workshops and training on cultural competence to better meet the health needs of this important population."
