Canada continues to accept permanent residence applications through the Home Support Worker Pilot.

The Canadian government is yet to reach the cap for the pilot. The webpage will be updated if the government does close the pilot to new applications in 2020.

The Home Child Care Provider Pilot, another pilot that was launched last summer, has been filled after a total of 2,750 applications were submitted under the pilot. Applications will reopen on January 1, 2021.

Those who have submitted applications through either of the two pilots need not contact the immigration department. Canada will send notification letters to the applicants once processing starts. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says it may take longer than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic.

What are these pilots?

The two pilots allow qualified caregivers to apply for permanent residence and come to Canada.

Those who have job offers as caregivers in Canada may be able to apply for immigration through one of the pilots.

Applicants may also be required to have qualifying work experience, as either a child care provider, or a home support worker. Experience as foster parents or housekeepers does not count.

How does it work?

Candidates who have at least 24 months of work experience may be eligible to apply for their related pilot program.

If other interested candidates meet other requirements, they may not need the full 24 months of work experience before applying.

Those who want to work as home support workers can apply now. However, those who wish to work as child care providers, must wait until the pilot reopens next year.

Candidates are also required to submit a work permit application as they are applying for permanent residence.

Successful candidates will receive a temporary work permit, that is an occupation-restricted work permit. This means that holders can work as caregivers for any employer.

Once they complete the required 24 months of work experience, they can then send in their proof of experience, and Canada will make a final decision on their permanent residence application.
