According to the Better Life Index, created by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada placed second out of 34 counties for having the best quality of life.

The Better Life Index examines several factors, such as housing, health, governance, work-life balance, and environment and life satisfaction.

Out of the 34 countries examined, Canada was found to have one of the best education systems in the world. Employment was found to be high, even with a weakened economy. Many Canadians polled said they feel safe outside their homes and only 17 per cent noted they were uncomfortably going out on the street after dark.

Canadians were found to have one of the highest self-reported rates of satisfaction. More than three-quarters of those polled said life is good.

There were several areas which Canada was found to be lacking, including higher obesity rates, higher-child care costs, and less available leisure time. Although child-care costs were found to be higher than other countries, Quebec offers a $7-a-day daycare program, with other family benefits, and federally, parents are offered $100 per month to cover care for children under six years old.
