On Tuesday, Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced that the Canadian government has begun the process of reviewing current Canadian immigration procedures, with a view to further streamlining application processing under the Federal Skilled Worker category.

There are currently 38 occupations that determine an individual’s eligibility for immigration to Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker category, and they have been in place since 2008. Those occupations were chosen after Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) consulted carefully with provincial and federal authorities to determine what occupations were most in demand around the country at the time.

Now that the Canadian economy has emerged from the global recession, Canada will be re-examining the labour market and determining which professions are undergoing a shortage of skilled workers. This may alter the list of open occupations.
