The Canadian government announced today that it will introduce special measures to facilitate immigration to Canada for Afghan nationals who have worked with the Canadian mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
These measures are expected to be put into place in October. Eligible Afghan nationals will be able to apply for Canadian immigration under these measures until the end of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan in 2011.
Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Canada Jason Kenney said the contributions of Afghan staff who have supported the Canadian mission must be recognized.
"There are Afghans who face extraordinary personal risk as a result of their work in support of Canada’s mission in Kandahar. We commend their bravery to help build a better Afghanistan while recognizing the price that they have paid. To recognize their contribution, we will offer them special consideration if they wish to relocate to Canada," said Kenney.
Spouses and dependent children of Afghan staff who have been killed as a result of employments or contracts in support of the Canadian mission are also eligible to immigrate to Canada under these special measures.
