This week, from October 21 to 27, is Canadian citizenship week! To celebrate the importance of Canadian citizenship, a range of activities are being held throughout the country.

“Citizenship Week calls attention to the rights, privileges and responsibilities we have as citizens of this great country,” said Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander. “Canadians understand that citizenship should not be simply a passport of convenience. Citizenship is a pledge of mutual responsibility and a shared commitment to values rooted in our history.”

As part of this special week, a full 58 citizenship ceremonies will be held across Canada. In addition, Minister Alexander will be personally participating in a number of citizenship activities, such as the Canadian Citizenship Challenge being held in Gatineau, Quebec.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has made a list of 12 things Canadians can do to celebrate this week. A few of these are:

  • Proudly fly the Canadian flag
  • Have a Canada themed friend or family gathering and reaffirm your citizenship
  • Attend a citizenship ceremony and welcome new Canadian community members
  • Volunteer and get involved in your community
