The Canadian economy showed the largest monthly gain in jobs on record in April, adding 108,700 jobs. In addition, Canada’s jobless rate fell from 8.2 per cent in March to 8.1 per cent in April.
Experts had predicted that the job growth would be around 25,000 jobs for the month, but the figure turned out to be four times higher than expected.
The job growth took place largely in the following industries: construction, building and other support services, retail trade, wholesale trade, and business.
The provinces that saw the most job growth were Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. These provinces have been welcoming a steadily increasing number of immigrants in recent years, due to the availability of jobs and the high quality of life they offer.
