the CanadaVisa Team - 18 March, 2011

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon recently announced that will contribute almost $11 million to foster democratic institutions projects in Egypt and the surrounding boarder regions.

"Everywhere, I witnessed the strong determination by Egyptian leaders to transform the clearly expressed will of the Egyptian people to build a society based on freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," stated Cannon during a press conference in Rome.

A Canadian International Development Agency, Decent Employment for Youth Project, will be providing a majority of the funds. The Youth Project is aimed at training young people to find jobs and start their own businesses in manufacturing and tourism.

Both the Canadian and German governments will be contributing $300,000 to train journalist in Egypt’s media sector.

Canada will be contributing over $500,000 to a United National electoral support program, which will provide technical support to ensure that democratic elections are fair and credible. Canada will also be contributing $100,000 to help the Government of Tunisia transition into democracy.
