Canada celebrates Citizenship Week

the CanadaVisa Team - 19 October, 2011

From October 17 to 23 Canada celebrates Citizenship Week. This celebration attracts over 4,000 people from across Canada to participate in activities to reflect on citizenship and Canadian values. More than 60 Canadian citizenship ceremonies are taking place around the country where Canadians will reaffirm their commitment to Canada.

"Citizenship Week is an opportunity for Canadians across the country to celebrate their citizenship and to learn more about Canada's history and the pioneers who helped build this great country", so said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.

Minister Kenney began the celebrations by attending a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa along with grade 10 students who participated in an interactive game-show quiz. Students competed against Parliamentary Press Gallery members and were asked questions regarding citizenship and Canadian history. The ten questions were based on Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Canadian Citizenship, which is a study guide for those preparing to pass a Canadian citizenship test.

"Discover Canada is an excellent source for both newcomers and established Canadians to find out more about our history and the pioneers that helped to build this great country," added Minister Kenney. He also announced the launch of an e-book and mobile application version of Discover Canada, making the study guide more accessible through different mediums.
