Canada and Yukon to collaborate on immigration through new agreement

The new Agreement on Canada-Yukon Cooperation on Immigration was recently announced by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Diane Finley, and the Yukon Minister of Education, Patrick Rouble. The new agreement will help strengthen the partnership between the two governments to encourage immigration to the Yukon Territory.

The new agreement sets out immigration roles and responsibilities and includes provisions to help the Yukon keep pace with its economic, social, and demographic needs. Among the terms, the new agreement:

enhances cooperation between Canada and Yukon in overseas promotion and recruitment activities to attract skilled immigrants, temporary workers and students to the territory;
allows Yukon to nominate more immigrants with specific skills that respond to the territory's labour market needs through its nominee program;
commits the two governments to working together to secure better recognition of foreign qualifications and faster integration of immigrants into the labour market;
ensures that the federal government provides fair and ongoing funding for immigrant settlement services in the Yukon.

A new Yukon immigration web portal was also recently launched to promote the territory as an immigration destination and to help immigrants prepare for and settle into life in the Yukon.

New funding has also been pledged to help Yukon newcomers access language training programs and referrals to community resources for assistance with finding work and settling into new communities.
