Dozens of people gathered in Surrey, British Columbia on Sunday to speak out against immigration fraud and fraudulent consultants.

The Secretary of South Asian Immigration and Marriage Fraud Victims Society (SAIM), Balvir Dhalival, noted that over 1,000 people living in British Columbia have been the victims of fraudulent immigration consultants.

Many of these newcomers wanted to bring their family members to Canada and were paying thousands of dollars to immigration consultants. Unfortunately, families were not reunited and money was lost to fraudulent consultants.

Recently, the Government of Canada has introduced new legislation in hopes of reducing the number of fraudulent consultants. Immigration consultants will have to be members of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council and unauthorized individuals who provide immigration advice or services for a fee can to be fined up to $100,000.
