An Ontario county welcomes immigrants

the CanadaVisa Team - 29 September, 2011

An Ontario community, Simcoe County, is welcoming immigrants with open arms. The county is one of 45 in Ontario that has been asked by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to host a partnership aimed at analyzing the needs of current residents and newcomers.

This year, Simcoe County will be working with employers, school boards, government and other stakeholders to develop a three-year settlement strategy for newcomers to the area.

In an interview with the Barrie Examiner, Sandra Lee, project manager of the county’s immigration project said, "It's really important. Long-term population statistics say we need newcomers to facilitate that growth. Communities that embrace newcomers will benefit from an enhanced labour force, economic development opportunities and an increased tax base. We need to become more aware of how we're intersecting with immigrants and their needs.”

Throughout the next few months, the local immigration partnership will hear from community stakeholders through focus groups, online surveys, and from immigrants as well.
