Alberta offers advice to immigrant parents

the CanadaVisa Team - 08 February, 2011

The province of Alberta has created a new program designed specifically for immigrants with young children. Alberta Health Services is now offering a 23-part audio series in five different languages. Information for the program was gathered from public-health nurses and workers who practice within immigrant communities.

The audio series is available in French, Mandarin, Spanish, Somali and Sudanese Arabic. Topics discussed in the series range from a wide variety of issues for new parents, such as which foods to feed infants, how to manage crying babies, and how a new baby can affect parents’ lives. The information is similar to what all new parents receive in Alberta, but is now available to immigrants who may not be fluent in English.

The program was designed in an audio format to make information more accessible to immigrants who may not have the time to read through numerous texts. Moving to a new country can be stressful enough and having a newborn child can add even more to that stress. Most newcomers to Canada have left their extended family behind and having resources and information about raising young children is highly beneficial.

The series will become available at various settlement and immigrant agencies, and on the Internet at www.safechildren.ca
