A recent Fraser Institute survey named the province ofAlbertaas having North America's best-performing labour market over the past five years, beating out 50 American states and all other Canadian provinces andterritories.
Among Canadian provinces,Saskatchewanwas named the second best performing labour market, finishing 10th overall, andBritish Columbiareceived the 12th position. The study looked at labour relations laws, public sector employment, unionization and minimum wages as labour market aspectsthat directly affect performance.
With the highest employment growth rate in the country, Alberta performed consistently well across all measures of the Fraser Institute survey. The mostnotable annual increases in employment for the Services-Producing industries were in Health Care and Social Assistance, Wholesale Trade, and Building andOther Support Services. Alberta continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in Canada, with Calgary's as the lowest among Canadian cities and Edmonton'sas the fourth lowest. Currently in a shortage labour market, there are manycurrent job opportunitiesin Alberta.
