A Day for All Canadians to Celebrate Canada

the CanadaVisa Team - 17 July, 2015

July 1st, 2007 will mark the 140th anniversary of the confederation ofCanada , whereby the existing British North American provinces were united in the federation of Canada. Now commonly known as Canada Day, Canadians have been celebrating the official establishment of the country on July 1st since 1867.

Canada Day is an opportunity for all Canadians, whether born in Canada, or newly arrived, to recognize the benefits and opportunities that the country offers. Many Canadian immigrants have chosen Canada because of these opportunities that they did not have access to previously. Built on a strong tradition of immigration, Canada’s annual immigration numbers are among the highest in the world and are continually increasing. 254,400 newcomers were welcomed to Canada between July 1st, 2005 and July 1st, 2006, an increase of over 9,800 compared to the previous year.

Taking a look at some recent polls, Canada’s multicultural society has a lot to be grateful for. The U.N. Human Development Index ranks Canada among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of standard of living, literacy and education, and life expectancy. The average Canadian will live 80.34 years and will enjoy access to universal education and health care. In terms of quality of life, most major Canadian cities rank within the top 25 most livable cities worldwide. Vancouver is listed in the top three and Montreal and Toronto are among the top ten. A recent BBC polls suggests that even those who do not live in Canada recognize its merits, as Canada ranked at the top of a list of 27 countries in terms of global popularity.

This weekend, Canadians will be gathering in their communities from coast to coast to celebrate Canadian heritage, Canadian pride, and the possibilities that the country has afforded them. Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Diane Finley will be participating in a special citizenship ceremony in Ottawa with Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada. Seventeen families from across the country will take their oath of citizenship in this special Canada Day ceremony, which marks the60th anniversary of Canadian citizenship .
