Last year broke several records for visitors and immigrants from the three largest source countries for newcomers to Canada. Every year tens of thousands of individuals from China, India, and the Philippines become permanent residents of Canada. Hundreds of thousands more travel to the country to visit,
China is the largest source of immigrants to Canada. Nearly 1.5 million Canadians can trace their roots to China. In 2013, more than 34,000 Chinese citizens became Canadian permanent residents. A further 29,000 arrived as international students, and more than 270,000 arrived on visitor visas. The number of visitor visas issued to Chinese nationals increased a whopping 120 per cent last year.
India also saw increased levels of immigrants and travelers to Canada. Last year, India was the source of more than 33,000 new permanent residents. 14,000 students and more than 130,000 visitors also traveled from India to Canada during that time period. The number of student visas issued to Indian nationals has seen a steady increase in recent years. Current levels are 14 per cent higher than they were five years ago.
The Philippines, Canada’s third largest source country for immigrants and travelers, has also seen record numbers of Canadian visas issued to its citizens. 47,000 visitors came to Canada last year, a whopping 57 per cent increase since 2006. In addition, almost 30,000 of last year’s new permanent residents were citizens of the Philippines. More than 650,000 Canadians have roots in this country, and the Filipino population is increasing as larger numbers are able to study, immigrate, and visit their families.
Overall, these numbers represent an increase in Canadian visa services across the board. Since 2006, Canada has enjoyed the highest sustained levels of immigration in its history, a trend that appears to continue for years to come.
