I have a question:

My WP expires on August 30th, so I know I need to apply for an extension (with same employer) at least on July 30th, or earlier. Now, what I would prefer to do would be to apply sometime in May or June, but I would like to travel for 2 weeks to Europe at the beginning of July. Would anyone be able to tell me if I am going to have problems coming back to Canada in that situation - my WP being valid for another 1,5 months but there being another application submitted and under consideration at the time of my return? Are the officers at the border going to somehow question the validity of my return? Additionally - I will have a new passport then, under a changed name (back to my maiden name from a former combination of maiden - hyphen - married), but the WP is for my old name in the old-name passport. I called CIC and they told me I can travel with them both and a document + translation stating that the name has been changed and there wouldn't be any problem. Anyone has experience with that?

Also, I want to apply for PR (outland), but I am planning to do it after I'm back from my European trip rather than before (so after I, preferably, apply for my WP extension), what do you think guys?

1.- You can back anytime before your WP expires, no problem

2.- About the name, that CIC told you is that usually I read in this forum: carry both passports and documents (translated) proven it.
Here is usual change the name so shouldn't be a problem, but let someone with experience tell us.

3.- Are you applying PR outland?
If you're in Canada should be Inland.

If you meet PR requirements you should apply ASAP, never delay your application, because rules and circumstances changes too quickly (I got in some complications for this reason).

4.- I'm assuming your WP extension application is well supported.

Knowing processing time is online 129 days and paper base 114 days I strongly recommend you to apply 160/144 days before your WP expires.

If for some reason you extension is not granted you'll get rejection before WP expires (hopefully) and have some time to re-apply.

If extension of granted you will not stay in Implied Status, which is better.

Perhaps You can apply even soon, just be sure to fill the date until you want to work as 1 year (maybe 2 years, its depend on LMIA and temporary workers rules) after your current WP expires. Add your current WP copy with the application.

Be sure to apply for WP extension and PR using your new passport and adding copies of your old passport, name change docs and WPs

Hey there, thanks! For PR i can apply outland and stay in Canada, that I know for sure :) for the rest I guess all seems clear then, but I will apply 30 days before expiry date, implied status is fine (I did this once already), and I am LMIA exempt :) for PR it' s family class so I have to wait a few months, my question was whether it's better to apply for PR before or after I'm back from my trip and before or after I apply for WP extension.

You can apply before or after you travel as it won't make any difference. You just need a valid work permit(multiple entry visa) to re-enter Canada. And probably carry a letter from your employer about your trip just incase officer may ask.

Ok, thank you so much! :) I am visa-exempt and an academic, I didn't have problems last year coming back in the same setting of circumstances but just wanted to make sure :) thanks!

It doesn't matter, but as a general rule it's better to apply for PR as soon as possible

I know, thanks, but there are also requirements (like living together for at least 12 consecutive months and so on) which need to be fulfilled first, after all :) So anyway, thanks a lot guys, it seems there is no reason to worry, then. Fingers crossed for all your permit and PR applications!
