Working Second Job on Maintained Status With OINP-Based Closed Work Permit

I'm hoping someone can help clarify my situation.

I was nominated under the OINP (non-Express Entry) stream and submitted my PR application in December 2024. Along with my nomination, I received a letter of support from OINP to apply for a work permit extension. My PGWP was expiring, so I applied for a closed work permit based on that letter in early February 2025. The letter mentions my current job/employer, so the new work permit is employer-specific (closed).

My PGWP has now expired, and I am currently on maintained status while waiting for a decision on my closed work permit. I am continuing to work at the same job mentioned in my OINP support letter and PR application.

Here’s my situation:

• I want to take on a second part-time job.
• The automated letter I received after submitting the work permit extension says I can continue working under the same conditions as my previous work permit (i.e., PGWP), so I assume I can currently work multiple jobs while on maintained status.
• However, once the closed work permit is approved, I understand I will be restricted to working only for the employer named on the permit.

My questions:

1. Can I apply for a second (open) work permit now while my closed work permit application is still in process?
2. Alternatively, should I wait until I receive an AOR for my PR application and then apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)?
3. Are there any other options that would allow me to legally continue working a second job after the closed work permit is approved?

You can work a second job while you are on maintained status. Once the closed work permit is approved you would need to stop.

Which OINP stream have you applied under? Assuming it is an employer support stream, you unfortunately don't qualify for a BOWP.

So just to confirm—since this stream doesn’t make me eligible for a BOWP, does that mean I won't have any option to continue working a second job once my closed work permit is approved? Is there any other type of permit I could apply for to keep the second job legally?

You can only work for the employer that has supported your nomination and work permit until you are PR. You quit the second job. No way to work.

But by then you will have your close work permit with your employer whose supporting your OINP application.

I believe your job will be full time and have fair pay.

You cannot work for another employer with a close work permit.
