Working remotely for US company while in Canada

Hi all,

I am planning to start "extended visits" to my boyfriend in Vancouver beginning this summer, with the intent to establish a common-law relationship and eventually apply for permanent residency. Since I will not be able to legally work in Canada, I would like to maintain my current job and work remotely. I would be returning every few months and working from the office here for a few weeks. I've discussed this with my boss and he would like to keep me on as well, but we need to figure out the legality of it. He is getting a lot of questions as he runs it up the chain of command, and people are saying (with, I'm assuming, a lot of ignorance) that I would need a work permit. Is it legal for a US citizen to work remotely for a US company while visiting Canada? What are the tax implications? I am trying to get some definitive answers to share with them and hopefully make my case. So far a lot of what I've seen has been anecdotal and often conflicting information. I've also read that as long as I don't spend more than 182 days in Canada I do not have to pay income taxes there. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance!

Kindly consult immigration consultant for the most accurate answer but I am just wondering if any individual goes for a holiday ( ie, visit ) and carries their laptop and does some work, whats the harm in that?
I dont think there are any tax implications I work remotely too, I visit US, India and work from there but these are short trips

I do agree with this. It seems that you have some personal disputes with the immigration or Canadian Government. Its better to consult with the professionals rather any non professional person for a better advise..
