Hi,
I am a British student currently in Canada completing a one year exchange. I recently been informed that this means I will have to stop working the moment my course ends, not at the end of the study permit as I had initially thought. The last week of course is last week of April, and study permit expires 31st August. I have a SIN that is valid until the end of August, which is why I assumed I would be able to continue working.
I am supposed to be working a contract out in BC over the summer (the employer didn't see a problem with my Visa, so I wasn't aware of this issue). I have booked flights out there and all my equipment as everyone I've spoken to previously seemed to think it would be ok!
I've applied for the IEC, but it's unlikely to come by the start of May which is when my course ends/the job starts. Are there any routes I could consider to find a path towards being legally allowed to work until September? Such as:
*Applying for Open Work Permit?
*Waiting for IEC (would I be able to work while this was processing)?
*Applying for an extension of some kind?
There's a section on the IRCC website which states that students are allowed to keep working if they've already applied for a work permit, but it's not clear if this applies to students on a year visa, or to the IEC.
Alternatively, would applying for a summer school count as returning to full time education before the end of August? Or is there literally anything I can do?
Apologies if this is a stupid question I've just been finding it really difficult to navigate the different terms and conditions, and having already misinterpreted the rules once in a way that's really screwed things up don't want to make the same mistake again!
