Hello All,

My cousin has finished his 3 years diploma from a college in Toronto. He has applied for his post graduate work permit a few weeks ago. He started full time work in January 2016. Will this work be counted towards his CEC for Express Entry while his work permit application is in process? His study permit and SIN expires in July 2016.

Thank you.

As per the below requirement, No.

"If you choose to be assessed against the CEC criteria, OINP requires that you have a minimum of one year of cumulative and full-time employment (1,560 hours or more) or an equal amount in part-time paid work experience in a NOC 0, A, or B occupation in Canada in the past three years from the date of the PT notification of interest from OINP."

I don't understand! I'm asking if his work experience will be counted from the date he started work (January 2016) or will it count from the start date mentioned on the work permit?

Experience would be counted from the date he started work. May I ask what is the date on the work permit?

It will be counted from the date he start working or he finishes all course requirement, whichever is later.

He applied for work permit a few weeks ago. It's still under processing. From what I've heard from other recent graduates, it take about 2-3 months to get the work permit. He is worried that his current work won't be counted towards his CEC when he applies for express entry early next year.

This a tricky question. Once you complete your course your offcampus work permit sort of turns into a PGWP(until your PGWP arrives) provided you applied for one.
Technically yes the count will start from when he started working and not when the PGWP starts. I would highly recommend getting in touch with appropriate authority from the college in which they graduated. They will have the legal answer for this question.
Hope it helps

He has graduated from college. The official letter from college states that he graduated end of December 2015. He started working full time around the 2nd week of January 2016.

Thank you. I appreciate the replies.

He called CIC and they say it DOES NOT count. I wasn't sure, hence I wanted to ask the forum members. In theory it should count as he has a valid SIN number and has applied for his work permit.
