Worked everything out regarding TRP but now I have another question.

I posted a few months back. My wife and I had been crossing the border almost every day between the US and Canada. I'm a Canadian citizen and she has a TRP (temporary resident permit) not to be confused with a TRV (temporary resident visa). We had some issues at a different port of entry we went to and she almost got her TRP taken away because they believed she was illegally living in Canada. Anyway, we sorted it out. It seems that with a TRP she CAN live in Canada (and can even apply for a work permit if her TRP is good for more than 10 months). So, we haven't had any issues at our usual port of entry and everything has been worked out.

Now, my wife will be applying for Rehabilitation for a misdemeanour shoplifting crime she committed when she was 18 (theft of a $50 shirt) in October. The port of entry said it should take a week or so to get the rehabilitation if we apply there directly. So, we anticipate that we will get the Rehabilitation at the beginning of November. We plan to apply for spousal sponsorship ASAP (like the day we get the rehab documents). I know the usual timetable for an uncomplicated sponsorship of a US citizen is pretty short (like 8 months from what I've read). The problem is that her TRP expires in December. So, she will be without a TRP for most of the wait. Is it possible to apply for an extension of her TRP so she can remain in Canada with me while the process of sponsorship is completed?

Also, how long are the FBI police reports good for and is it faster to go through the FBI themselves or a third-party channeller?

Thank you!

Follow this process and you'll have your PCC very quickly. They are valid for 6 months.
1. If you are still in the US, then you can inquire at your local police department for fingerprint services, or call your local FBI field office to make an appointment for prints. Prices vary based on who provides your prints. If you are in Canada, call your local Commissionaires office (https://www.commissionaires.ca/en/national/home?postal_cancel=1) and make an appointment to get your fingerprints done. Tell them it is for immigration purposes and that you need 2 copies of ink prints. The cost is roughly 60 CAD for the prints.
2. Go to the FBI's electronic records site here (https://www.edo.cjis.gov/#/) and fill out a request for the police clearance. The cost is like 18 USD per request. You will receive email verification with a link and PIN number to access your request online. Do NOT delete this. You will need that link and PIN to access your completed PCC once done.
3. Once you submit this, it will put your request into the FBI system. At this point, you need to mail your fingerprints in to the FBI. The address is provided for you when you submit your request.
4. Once the FBI receives your fingerprints, you will receive a PDF of the PCC in your email which you print out and submit with your application. Their turnaround time is about 24 hours from the time they receive your prints in the mail.

Hi Mrs. December, thank you so much! We had actually requested prints before when we thought we would be able to go through the spousal sponsorship process. It took a long time to get it (approximately 2-3 months) back from the FBI following the steps you outlined above. Should we try through them again? Her first police clearance came back clean despite her misdemeanour conviction (which was odd). Maybe we should do what you said now to make sure it gets to us in time. :) Thanks again!

This process is through the FBI electronic records division. This is a way that is recently begun in order to help facilitate quicker turnaround times for police certificates. I got my prints done by my local Commissionaires office, mailed them in, put in my electronic request, and got my PCC all within 7 days time. :)
