Work Permit while waiting for PR Stage 1?

Hi guys!

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a very confusing topic. Was trying to find the answer on CIC, but it was quite confusing.
I will explain: right now I have an open work permit, which is valid for another 7 months.
Before it expires, me and my SO want to apply for common law sponsorship (we can apply a month before it expires).
My questions are:
1. How long does it take for my sponsor to get approved (Stage 1), and which path should be faster (inland or outland)?
2. Is it possible to extend my open work permit, for the period *before* the sponsor is approved(or maybe the implied status that I get while waiting allows me to work - since the previous status was an open work permit)?
I also already know that to get the OWP after Stage 1, I should apply for it with the PR application.

I hope it makes sense.
Thanks guys!

1. Out of Canada, 44 days, In Canada 14 months. Out of Canada is usually faster.
2. No. I assume you are holding an IEC or PGWP.
3. You can only apply for an OWP if you are apply for In Canada spousal sponsorship and you won't get it until 1st stage approval, i.e. 14 months.
